Quality of Life

Palliative Care Support

Movement and pain control support one’s quality of life.

At the end of one’s life, what are the goals? For many it includes being able to be able to continue to live  independently with limited pain for as long as possible and to have those around one be able to give the support needed when it is needed. This time in one’s life can be for years or a few months depending on the diagnosis and stage of the progression.

Dr. McNamara has had the honor of supporting some of her clients through every stage until a few days before they passed on. Over the years she worked with her clients she was able to provide the following skills:

  • Pain Management through manual therapy/ massage and stretching
  • Ambulation and transfer training with the ability to modify and re-train as needed
  • Strength training and Range of Motion for continued ability to function to one’s optimal ability
  • The ability to listen to her client’s concerns and listen to their stories throughout the session
  • The ability to change the session to whatever is needed that day to support her client
  • Patient/ Caregiver education for safety in transfers and ambulation
  • Advise on supportive equipment such as raised toilet seat, walkers, canes, hospital beds, wheelchairs, resting splints
  • Advise on how to avoid complications including pressure sores
  • The ability to communicate with all involved with the client’s care.
  • Diagnoses where a palliative mindset may be supportive include those diagnosed with: Dementia/ Alzheimer’s disease, Cancer, Neurological Diseases including Parkinson’s Disease, Pulmonary Diseases including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Heart Disease.

The longer one is able to walk, get up and eat, leave their bed, use the bathroom the greater the quality of life will be for them and for their loved one’s caring for them. Quality of life can be extremely simple and the most powerful at the same time.

Dr. McNamara brings compassion and support to all her clients and is comfortable working with end of life issues and making sure the client’s needs are met for the best quality of life possible. Contact Dr. McNamara today to discuss yours or your loved ones needs.

Testimonials

My husband, aged 93, fell in the bedroom and broke his hip. Following surgery my determined husband wanted to resume his normal activities as quickly as possible. He was convinced he needed the right kind of physical therapist to help get back on his feet. A few months later, he started twice-weekly sessions with Tara, and he was on his way. At first all exercise was in the apartment, soon after in the building’s gym, and in good weather out on the sidewalk, usually to the corner grocery to bring me flowers. Tara continued to see him until he left us a few years later due to a return of his cancer. Tara was able to offer supportive sessions throughout and he remained able to walk and participate in life until the very end.
